SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy DLC Review: Steal the Skull

A few months ago, SNK released SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy, an all-female lead fighter, which I thought was decent in its own right. One of my biggest complaints was the limited roster, which SNK has tried to resolve by adding a few DLC characters to the mix.

For $4.99 each, players can add Skullo Mania and Thief Arthur to their roster. Like most of the original characters, both fighters are limited in their repertoire and feature the single button supers and standard attacks. If you liked (or didn’t like) the way the original cast was handled in the base game, you’ll likely feel the same about the follow up characters.

Both of the characters appear as guests from other titles. Thief Arthur is on lease from Square Enix’s Million Arthur, while Skullo Mania first debuted in Street Fighter EX as a hidden character, later being tapped for Arika’s Fighting EX Layer.

If you are wondering what to expect in terms of skills, Skullo Mania plays much like a grappler, with most of her moves being close quarters, melee, and grab style attacks. I found Thief Arthur to be more up my alley, with the bulk of her attacks taking wide arcs or being projectile based, making her an excellent choice for keeping distance between you and your opponent.

Outside of their individual endings, which your interest will hinge on whether you were into their backstories previously, there isn’t much else that was added to warrant a purchase if you’re on the fence. If you love the base game, it’ll be more of the same; if you’re like me and found the overall experience to be lacking in comparison to other fighting games on the market, you’ll probably still feel that way, but you’ll be out an additional $10 if you purchase both characters.

Here at GBG we use a rating method that you are more than likely familiar with – a scale of 1 to 10. For clarification, we intend on using the entire scale: 1-4 is something you should probably avoid paying for; 5-7 is something that is worth playing, but probably not at full price; 8-10 is a great title that you can feel confident about buying. If you have any questions or comments about how we rate a game, please let us know.
