Ys VIII PC Review Delayed Due to Issues

People love to praise the PC format when it comes to video games. There’s a reason many will refer to it as the PC master race. However, that statement is often in regards to games that are made specifically for the PC and then ported elsewhere, not the other way around. There are plenty of examples regarding this fact, although Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA from NIS is the most recent example. The game originally launched on PS4 and PS Vita back in September of 2017, and was delayed on PC the day before launch. It’s also expected later this year on the Switch. The reasoning for the delay on PC was to improve the quality of the game, which is completely understandable. Regrettably, when the game launched on April 16th, 2018, it was with widespread issues being known.

Over the past few days I’ve utilized the various workarounds that were provided, as well as attempting my own fixes. This included turning the graphic settings all the way to low and disabling pretty much every option that would enhance the game (while my rig is a few years old now, the specs still surpass those required to enjoy this game). Unfortunately, it freezes whenever I complete the prologue. Either it would crash at the Chapter 1 screen, or moments after when I thought I was finally going to see the rest of the game. I fully intend on reviewing this port of the game, and I can say that the game itself is pretty great based on the PS versions (especially after they completely revamped the localization on January 30th), but I can’t recommend grabbing the PC version at this time.
